  2.                           UTILITY LOGS
  3.                           ------------

  5.   This log gives information on the Application Keys which include some
  6.   useful utilities to use with logs/library.  Use the keys when in any log; 
  7.   use the Esc key if you want to return to the log without performing the
  8.   function.
  9.   
  10.   Alt-F1 - Find Patterns
  11.  
  12.   This function is unique to the 'Fish Expert', and you will not see it
  13.   anywhere else.  It helps you find and create your own patterns from
  14.   you own experiences.  For example, after you enter sufficient information
  15.   in your record log, you specify a keyword for the desired fish, season,
  16.   time, bait, etc. and the pattern creator here gives you all references
  17.   to your keyword.  You perform the function again and again to find 
  18.   patterns within patterns!

  20.   This function finds patterns in a log/library and puts them into a log 
  21.   called 'pattern' for you to subsequently use.  For example, you specify that
  22.   you want all references to 'bass' in the log you are working on.  Enter
  23.   'bass' as the first keyword.  Then the function asks how many characters
  24.   after the first character of the keyword you desire to capture.  You must 
  25.   enter an integer less than 15,000 (no commas).  Then the function asks 
  26.   how many characters to include before the keyword and again you must enter 
  27.   an integer less than 15000.  The function then finds the keyword and 
  28.   includes in the 'pattern' log characters before the keyword and after the 
  29.   keyword per your specifications.  Keywords are not relisted when they fall 
  30.   in the range you specify.  This allows you to get all the information 
  31.   about the keyword you seek.

  33.   The function then gets all references and following text for bass in
  34.   the log you have up.  The search is exact; if you specify 'bass', you do
  35.   not get 'Bass'.  To get both references, do the function twice.  The 
  36.   function appends data at the end of the existing 'pattern' log until you
  37.   rename or delete the file 'pattern' to start over.  You may also perform
  38.   the function more than once with the same (or different) keyword using 
  39.   different log files.  The function appends the patterns any number of times 
  40.   so long as the total log file length remains under 64K.

  42.   You may want to edit the pattern log to take out lines captured in
  43.   excess of what you desire.

  45.   You rename the file 'pattern' to save the data and start over (do not use
  46.   an extension if you wish to work with it in the log section, e.g.
  47.   "rename pattern. pattern1." in DOS).  You select the 'pattern' log from the
  48.   log directory; then press F8 and enter 'pattern1' (or any name you want
  49.   with no extension); then press F9 specifying the log 'pattern' to
  50.   copy in selected parts or all of the pattern log; then press F10 to
  51.   save the file 'pattern1'.

  53.   The log is put in the main directory where your system files are. If
  54.   you have your logs in a different directory then you must copy the
  55.   pattern file to your log directory in order to view and select it
  56.   as you would other logs.  You may wish to use the Alt-B utility to
  57.   do this.

  59.   Delete the file 'pattern' (Use Alt-F6 utility) to just start over.
  60.   (Although Alt-F6 will not work from the log you are currently in
  61.   to delete this same log you are in).

  63.   Alt-F2 - Show Disk Space
  64.   
  65.   Shows space available on the disk.
  66.

  68.   Alt-F4 - Shows Date and Time
  69.

  71.   Alt-F6 - Deletes a file (but not the same log you currently have up).

  73.   You may use a fully qualified name.  If you do not specify the name
  74.   correctly, then the process just returns and no file is deleted.
  75.   
  76.   Alt-F7 - Show Free Memory
  77.   
  78.   This comes in handy if you have large logs and/or have lower computer 
  79.   memory (possibly from memory resident programs). Each time you bring 
  80.   in a log you use added memory.  While you use a log, if you use the 
  81.   auxiliary log (F8) with a log or file of 64K in length you need 64K more 
  82.   memory.  While using F8, if you use the F9 key to view another log or file 
  83.   which is 64K in length, the program requires an added 64K.  The total
  84.   added in this situation could amount to 128K additional required.

  87.   Alt-F9 - Copy all Logs
  88.   
  89.   This function allows you to easily backup or restore all your logs so you 
  90.   have added protection.  Also you can share you logs with other Fish Expert
  91.   enthusiasts.
  92.   
  93.   The function copies all logs (files with no extensions) in the directory
  94.   or disk you specify to the directory or disk you specify.
  95.   
  96.   E.g. 'c:\fish' for the from directory and 'a:' for the to directory copies
  97.   your logs to a disk in drive 'a'  (do not enter quotes).
  98.   
  99.   If the files do not fit on one disk, the process copies all the files it
  100.   can and then ends.  You must then use the 'Alt-B' function to copy those
  101.   files for which room did not exist to another disk where room exists.
  102.   You get an error 1112 'Cannot write correct number of bytes to file'
  103.   which is caused by a full disk. If a file is created with 0 bytes because
  104.   of a full disk, then you must delete it using Alt F6 since the file will
  105.   not work correctly with the program.  Your original file data remains 
  106.   safe, and you must use Alt B to copy it to a disk with enough room.

  108.   Alt-B - Copy selected Logs
  109.  
  110.   Copies one file you specify at a time from a disk or directory you
  111.   specify to a disk or directory you specify.
  112.   
  113.   E.g. Copy from 'C:\fish' brings up logs (files with no extension) in
  114.   directory 'C:\fish'.  Use arrow keys to move to the log you want to copy 
  115.   and press return to copy it to the disk and/or directory you specify.
  116.   Use the F4 key to change the file mask; for example, to '*.txt' to copy
  117.   a library file.
  118.   
  119.   Enter the disk and/or directory you wish to copy from and to and press 
  120.   return.  Pressing return with no directory copies files from or to the
  121.   current directory.

  123.   Also if you just want to view the files in a directory, just press return
  124.   with no directory or disk when asked to specify the 'to' and 'from' 
  125.   directory.  After finishing viewing, then press 'Esc' to return to your
  126.   log without copying any files.  You may use F4 once the files are
  127.   displayed and change the mask as desired; for example changing to
  128.   '*.*' allows you to see all files.

  130.   Alt-D - Accesses DOS
  131.   
  132.   Puts you in the Dos interactive mode where you can run other programs.
  133.   This process requires that the command interpreter (Dos: Command.com;
  134.   OS/2: Cmd.exe) is accessible.  In DOS if you install any memory resident
  135.   programs while using Alt-D, you probably will NOT be able to return to
  136.   the Fish Expert system successfully since the memory resident program
  137.   may take up required memory.  In OS/2 you are probably ok doing just
  138.   about anything.

  140.   Also, for those who have DOS less than 3.0, if you change directory from
  141.   the directory you are in when you press Alt-D, you must change back 
  142.   to this same directory or else you will get an error and may lose entered 
  143.   data in your log.  The directory is automatically changed back for DOS 
  144.   users 3.0 or higher.
